Why I'm Excited For This Weekend

Because you have to get excited for every weekend. It's the weekend. No cares or worries. Oh yeah, there's also plenty of time to watch sports. Namely football. But baseball too. September and October really are a magical time in the sports world. Baseball playoffs and the new car smell of the football season at the same time. In some ways, it's paradise.

Frankie and I have been talking a bit lately about the state of sports journalism, and how it has taken the turn for the sensationalist. So I'll try it out. Let's see if we're in this thing can generate that buzz we all want so very much.

So here you are, 5 reasons why I'm excited for this weekend.

1. Cam Newton fails against Green Bay.

That's right, while Tony Dungy, Chris Berman and the rest of the pundits made all the claims that the Panthers have found a quarterback, I have remained skeptical. That's right, I'm unconvinced that the Auburn product will be a successful quarterback. Newton looked good last Sunday, no joke, but he won't keep it up. Everything about his skill set screams that he's not a NFL quarterback. He will throw three interceptions and no touchdowns against the Green Bay defense and the Packers will roll to a 41-6 victory. On every post game wrap up, every single "expert" will talk about how the Panthers will draft Andrew Luck next year.

2. Boston will lose three out of four to the Rays.

Boston has seen it's hold on the AL East slip away and now they only remain four games ahead in the Wild Card. With four games in Boston again the Rays this weekend, the Sawks are reeling, and the Rays are firing on all cylinders. Now A-Gone is hurt, and the Rays will cut that deficit to 2 games with nine left to play. Though the schedule favors the Sawks in many ways, with Tampa Bay playing six against the Yankees, I think that the Rays fire will drive them to the postseason. This weekend will prove to be nails in the coffin for the struggling Red Sox.

3. Oklahoma will trounce Florida State.

Anyone who thinks any team in the ACC is a national power probably should have their head examined. Yes, Florida State is a decent team. So are a few other of those ACC teams. However, if you think for a minute that they can hold a candle to Oklahoma, you've had too much Kool-Aid. FSU has played Charleston Southern and University of Louisiana - Monroe to begin their season. They are in for a rude awakening with the Sooners coming into town. Last year, Oklahoma beat the Seminoles 47-17. Does anyone really believe that one year will make enough of a difference? This guy doesn't. Oklahoma takes it, 41-27.

4. Miami and Ohio St. play in the probation bowl.

Both teams end up with 5 more players suspended. Well, no. No they don't. This one isn't so much of a prediction as me just throwing my head back and laughing at two of the "powerhouses" (read: "cheaters") of college football. These are indeed two of the most storied programs in college football over the last two decades. This game should have been a huge matchup between two teams smelling a national championship. Instead, we get to watch two shamed programs play each other while the commentators lament and explain the mistakes that have led them to be also rans on the national landscape. However, this game will be special because it will be Miami, an ACC team, who hands Ohio St. the loss to thoroughly wound their pride. Canes win, 24-20.

5. We get to find out if last week's Steelers game was a fluke or if they are truly that bad.

Ok, this may have just been to get Frankie's goat. But, after getting blown out by the Ravens last week, I think that they are that bad. I think Big Ben has passed his prime. I think Mendenhall is overrated. I think too many key defensive players are over 30. They have the Seahawks at home on Sunday. I think they win the game on the virtue that Tavaris Jackson is a terrible quarterback, but I think they continue to look flat and have trouble getting into the end zone. Steelers on top, 17-10. Yeah, it's not that bold. It's bold enough putting down the Steelers in front of Frankie.

In honor of the Cal Band's show this week, here's a video that doesn't make sense:
