I'm sure you all know by now, but California, yes, that California Golden Bear baseball team has advanced through the regionals and earned a berth in the College World Series for the first time since 1992. That's right, the Bears haven't been to Omaha since George H.W. Bush's last year in office. The freshmen on this team were not alive when this program last was here. Think about that. Insane.
Talk about your ultimate Cinderella story. A program that was on the precipice of elimination has made it to the promised land. If Disney doesn't make a movie out of this in the next year or two starring Justin Bieber as Tony Renda, they will have seriously missed an opportunity, and instead I will make it.
Let's look at other things that happened in 1992.
- The Buffalo Bills lost their third of 4 straight Superbowls
- The Pittsburgh Pirates were in the playoffs, Barry Bonds was skinny and won his first MVP award. Also, he was on the Pirates.
- Dennis Eckersley won both the Cy Young and MVP award, the last player to do so.
- Eric Karros won Rookie of the Year honors
- Fred Couples was the best golfer on the PGA tour
- Jay Leno began hosting The Tonight Show
- Sinead O'Connor was a respectable musician
- Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" were the biggest hits of the year.
- Aladdin and Wayne's World were box office smashes. Unforgiven won the Oscar.
- The Pittsburgh Pirates had a record over .500
- Kirby was introduced by Nintendo.
- Mortal Kombat was released as an arcade game.
- Lord the Pirates have sucked since 92
Oh how far we've come.
Congratulations Bears. The nation is rooting for you.
Also, yeah, the A's lost again, big deal. Bob Melvin still has my confidence, and the A's have three against the Royals, and then three against the Giants to try to turn it around.
Trevor Cahill pitches tonight. He needs to right the ship in a bad way. He hasn't pitched a game the A's won since May 9th and has seen his ERA balloon from 1.72 to 3.18. That sinker needs to get down. I will it to be so.
Good quote:
"I know I'm a good player, I know he's a good player, and you can't have too many good players. These things have a way of working themselves out."—A’s second baseman Mark Ellis, on rookie Jemile Week's strong play in Ellis' absence, in the San Francisco Chronicle.
